Full Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled specialist (associate Specialist) who will work as an autonomously practicing anaesthetist in our department. This role will include weekday and evening work and 6 weekends per year on call covering trauma emergencies but no night time working. This is a senior position and applicants must be able to demonstrate high levels of experience and skill in anaesthesia for adults and children and participation in a range of non-clinical work including teaching, audit, service development and governance.

East Suffolk and North East Essex NHS Foundation Trust recognises specialists as autonomous practitioners as per the current Royal College of Anaesthetists Guidance and as such you will work within a team of consultants and specialists delivering a wide range of anaesthesia for general, orthopaedic, urology, gynaecological, ENT, trauma, emergency, robotic, laparoscopic day case, radiology procedures and ECT as well as covering a brand new Post-Operative Care Unit (POCU). This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity for the right anaesthetist looking to work and develop at a senior level. The post will include SPA and Admin time as well as a supplement for on call work.

This is an expansion post within the department. As such, it is both innovative and progressive and aims to provide additional senior anaesthetists within our workforce. The expectation is one of high levels of competence, Autonomy, enthusiasm and ability.

The post would be particularly attractive to individuals with an interest in 'hot list' urgent surgery, Post-Operative Care and Trauma, but through job planning the post can include other areas of speciality.

We are building a new elective orthopaedic centre for ESNEFT at Colchester Hospital. It will be one of the biggest centres in the country and will ensure we can retain complex and low volume cases locally for the people we serve.

We are also now building a £7million specialist interventional radiology and cardiac angiography unit at Colchester.

At Ipswich we are investing £35million in a new Emergency Department and co-located Urgent Treatment Centre, with additional diagnostic imaging kit (MRI and CT). There's a £5.3million molecular diagnostic laboratory soon to open at Ipswich, and works begins soon for a new Breast Care Centre and a Children's Unit.

Your main duties will be:

  • To provide specific pre-operative assessment, optimisation and preparation of patients undergoing anaesthesia. This will include arranging investigations, making referrals and organising entry onto appropriate pathways as required.

  • To expertly deliver a wide range of anaesthesia techniques appropriate to the patient, surgery and situation. This will effectively be as an 'autonomous practicing anaesthetist in accordance with current RCOA guidance'. This will be at Ipswich Hospita

  • To deliver other interventions and support that fall under the remit of anaesthetist

  • To participate in a weekend call rota covering trauma. This will be agreed with your clinical lead and attracts a 5% supplement and 1 PA per week to cover 13 weekend days per year

  • To participate in and lead on some governance, audit, risk and educational initiatives within the anaesthetic and Orthopaedic Anaesthetic departments. This will include attending and presenting at departmental governance meetings.

  • To participate in secior anaesthetic cover for the newly Built Post-Operative Care Unit (POCU)

  • To develop your areas of interest

  • Support trainees, junior doctors and other staff groups In their learning and training

  • The post holder will comply with all Trust requirements regarding appraisal, revalidation, mandatory training and job planning.
