Full Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity in the University of Sheffield.
We are looking for a Research Associate with a background in working with non-canonical amino acids (ncAA) for a new and exciting interdisciplinary project aiming at revolutionising the way we measure and understand proton transfer in biology and utilising proton transfer reactions across proteins for sustainability purposes.
The project is part of a funded ERC project, which will give the Research Associate the freedom and responsibility to establish a new facility for designing new ncAA, perform the directed evolution, and protein expression with several ncAAs in them. You will also be given the freedom to pursue novel independent directions in the context of the research group. The position is fully funded for at least 3 years.
The setting of the research group is highly interdisciplinary, and in addition to the primarily biological work related to this job, it includes chemical synthesis of the ncAA and other probes, ultrafast spectroscopy measurements, and even bioelectronic measurements.
You will benefit from an excellent mentorship and career development plan. For the long term, Research Associate will also experience mentorship of graduate students

We are looking for someone with a PhD or an equivalent experience in a biochemical/Biotechnological-related field such as biology, biotechnology, or chemistry.
You should have experience in

  • Working with expressing proteins with ncAA

  • Directed evolution of orthogonal aaRSs

  • Providing mentoring & supporting MSc & PhD Students

  • This position provides an excellent opportunity to develop interdisciplinary skills and the ability to communicate with researchers from different disciplines and backgrounds.

  • 38 days annual leave (including closure days and Bank Holidays), with the possibility to purchase up to ten additional days.

  • Up to 5 days of paid time off to cover emergency caring responsibilities.

  • A highly competitive pension scheme.

  • Discounts at participating shops and cinemas, and a cycle to work scheme.

  • A commitment to your development, with programmes, learning modules and mentoring schemes.

  • An inclusive and diverse workplace.

  • A commitment to your wellbeing, with confidential emotional support.
