Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head of Compliance to join us on a Full Time, Permanent basis!

This role is to manage the National Grid Electricity Distribution (ED) Compliance Programme which supports the embedding of the Group Code of Ethics and compliance culture at NGED. Alongside this you will maintain a robust preventative, detective, directive, and responsive compliance controls environment.

You will deliver compliance initiatives, controls, and assurance, using a risk-based approach, align to NG group programmes, policies, and procedure, adapting to ED specific requirements where necessary. Alongside this, you'll provide a holistic, transparent and useful compliance performance reporting to NGED leadership and Group.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and oversee a robust compliance programme that includes compliance strategy, adoption of NG group frameworks and controls and processes necessary for ED to comply with relevant electricity distribution regulation and legislation, corporate compliance and health and safety legislation.

  • Carry out routine risk assessments across all relevant compliance and ethics themes.

  • Horizon scan for new compliance requirements specific to ED.

  • Determine compliance assurance priorities in consultation with Internal Audit and other second line teams.

  • Develop and roll out ED specific compliance processes and procedures where applicable.

  • Ensure relevant ED level controls are in place for compliance with electricity distribution regulation and legislation - in coordination with relevant stakeholders.

  • Ensure relevant ED level controls are in place to maintain Corporate Compliance. This includes compliance with (but not limited to) the NG Modern Slavery Statement, Business Separation, Fair Competition, Human Rights Policy, Anti-Financial Crime Policy, Sanctions Policy and the Code of Ethics.

  • Roll out and monitor completion of mandatory NG group compliance training assignments.

  • Design, roll out and monitor ED specific compliance training where appropriate.

  • Routinely evaluate training to determine effectiveness.

  • Roll out compliance communication campaigns in line with NG group requirements and to support local compliance needs.

  • Promote NG group standards and processes for reporting compliance matters and concerns.

  • Ensure compliance risk matters and concerns are documented, assessed, and addressed in line with Group standards, escalating to Group and the ED executive Team in line with escalation protocols.

  • Identify and feed appropriate control assurance requirements into relevant 1st line self-assessment and 2nd line assurance mechanisms.

  • Leverage assurance and audit findings to further enhance the compliance programme.

  • Routinely evaluate the effectiveness of the ED Compliance Programme, proactively analysing relevant data to help detect anomalies and trends.

  • Maintain an up-to-date compliance map to document the compliance landscape at NGED, where responsibility sits across all identified compliance areas, key controls vs obligations and levels of risk.

  • Routinely report to the ED Ethics, Risk and Compliance Committee, ED Board and Group on the compliance landscape, risks and issues.

  • Ensure compliance gaps and control ineffectiveness are identified, documented, and remediated collaboratively with business stakeholders.

  • Leverage root cause analyses of gaps to improve effectiveness of the programme.

    Ability to engage with and influence stakeholders at all levels.

  • Ability to motivate, guide and coach other team members.

  • Proficient in written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

  • Prioritise and work well under pressure., Experience working in professional compliance and ethics teams, preferably with OFGEM or other highly regulated sector experience.

  • Experience leading professional compliance and ethics teams (direct or virtual) and programmes in a complex, matrix organisation.

  • Significant experience in a controls field (audit, assurance, risk management).

  • Professional compliance qualification desirable (but not obligatory), such as International Compliance Association diploma in Governance, Risk and Compliance

    A competitive salary of £74,000 - £110,000 per annum dependent on capability and experience.
