Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity for a Head Herdsperson to join our existing team in Chester, Cheshire is now available!

You will be working directly for the farm, not through REAL Success.

Our Farm

Our family-run farm covers 1100 acres, with a herd of 1000 which consists of 750 milking cows, 90 dry cows and calves. The herd is milked three times a day through a 60-point rotary and they are averaging 12,000 litres, with the milk supplied on a Muller Morrisons contract. The cows are housed and calved all year round, we are in the process of moving to Dairy Comp for all data and record keeping. You will be joining a full-time team of 10, who all share our passion for cows and dairy.

Your role

As the Head Herdsperson, you will be working closely with the current Herd Manager, to lead the dairy operation. AI & Foot trimming experience is preferred but not essential, other roles and responsibilities include.

- Daily management of the herd and ensuring animal welfare is the top priority.

- Ensuring the team is milking to a high and consistent standard, spotting and treating any illnesses that are identified.

- Liaising with the Farm Manager regarding the farm production targets & KPI's, including milk production, improving cow genetics and the breeding of the dairy herd. Implementing this to the dairy team.

- Assisting with dry cow management, calving cows and colostrum protocols.

- Liaising with Vets, nutritionists and consultants for the farm.

- Keeping the overall farm tidy and safe to operate. Ensuring health and safety legislations are met daily.

- Keeping basic records and compliance up to date., This is a role where you can develop your existing skills and knowledge, as we will provide support in your future goals.

A full UK driving license

- UK right to work

Your Requirements

- The right person will need to demonstrate experience in dairy and agriculture, but this is a role where you can develop into the Herd Manager role through your progression.

- Excellent communication skills, being able to effectively lead the team

- Be able to take on responsibility, adapt when needed and always be on the front foot.

- Possess the passion and care for the dairy herd, ensuring their welfare is your highest priority.

- Be confident, enthusiastic and ambitious to see the farm and team succeed.
