Full Job Description


  • An opportunity to join the expanding Specialty Binders team within Liberty Specialty Markets.
  • Exposure to a broad spread of property & casualty risks within the London and International market based on Leisure & Hospitality industries.

  • Opportunity to build relationships with brokers, clients and business partners in order to renew and acquire new business for the specialty portfolio.

  • Drive team strategy and planning in short and medium term including oversight of elements of business planning process

  • Work with Ceded Re team to evaluate Ri strategy and propose RI structure


  • About the Department & Team:


  • A market-leading team with extensive experience in the Personal Accident & Contingency world
  • Current book is a blend of both binder, lineslip and fac risks across the US, UK, Australia & Europe

  • Agile work environment - office and homeworking

  • Existing book is predominantly written on syndicate paper (Liberty Managing Agency Limited) but with the additional strength of being able to utilise LSM company stamp (Liberty Mutual Insurance Europe SE)


  • Key Responsibilities:

    Strategy and Planning


  • Support the development of the annual business plan for the Underwriting division and ensure delivery of the plan in accordance with its stated risk tolerances
  • Ensure the team's awareness of the business plan and its context so that they are able to take appropriate action and make informed decisions

  • Monitor adherence to the agreed Underwriting Division Business Plan, including benchmark pricing, premium income monitoring, credit control, exception reporting and monitoring of Lloyd's Realistic Disaster Scenarios

  • Contribute new ideas and concepts to support the development and delivery of the business plan

  • Works cross-functionally with counterparts in other functions (e.g. Claims, Actuarial, Finance, Portfolio Management etc.) to achieve objectives


  • Delivery


  • Establish and promote strong relationships with broker to drive new business opportunities and achieve business objectives
  • Represent Liberty's interests with internal and external groups, and through participation in industry forums and corporate activity to safeguard or enhance Liberty's market position.

  • Continually develop expertise and technical knowledge through appropriate development initiatives

  • Underwrite insurance risks in accordance with the business plan and personal authority to meet business objectives, including: i) Negotiating rates, terms and conditions for existing and new business ii) Compliance with the production and issue of documentation in accordance with contract certainty requirements

  • Contribute and influence in the review and analysis of the portfolio, to identify new business development opportunities including across different classes of business


  • Policy, Process and Procedures


  • Compliance with all applicable internal and external laws, regulations, policies, procedures and guidance
  • Adhere to underwriting standards, instructions and best practice methodology in order to minimise risk including adherence to all relevant regulatory requirements forms part of your role, and the demonstration of behaviours as set out in the Conduct Risk Policy

  • Comply with any reinsurance requirements in accordance with stated risk tolerances and to deliver against business plan, Work with the DAP Divisional Director and Underwriting Managers to provide direction and support within the team, ensuring that individuals are aligned to business objectives.

  • Motivate and develop the team by demonstrating good leadership behaviours and management best practice

  • Manage performance of direct reports in accordance with the company's performance process

    Extensive knowledge of relevant market conditions for specific class/portfolio

  • Strong knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements

  • Thorough understanding of class specific underwriting and reinsurance knowledge

  • Intermediate/ advanced level understanding of relevant software including Excel and other departmental software packages

  • People management - ability to engage and lead a team

  • Strong established customer/broker relationships
