Full Job Description

As a Highway Engineer your primary purpose will be to prepare the Key Route Network Maintenance Schemes for delivery, including pre-measures, preparation of drawings and specification and in consultation with other members of the team determine appropriate material choices to ensure that the City's Key Route Network is maintained to a high standard. You will also respond to correspondence from Councillors, Neighbourhood Managers, other officers, and members of the public in a timely manner in relation to an issues arising with regard to the schemes. You will also assist the Team Leader in the preparation of other works programmes from time to time as service area demands.

  • Currently officers are working from home or in the Civic Centre (by prior booking arrangements). The Highway Engineer role requires the officer to be working at various sites within the Salford City Council boundary. Occasionally there may be requirements to travel outside of the Salford boundary to attend some meetings.

    We are seeking an ambitious, self-motivated Engineer who can bring new experience and knowledge into our team, to assist in delivery of our Key Route Network Maintenance Programme and other Highway works programmes., Your style and approach will reflect our values: you will be passionate about what you do always striving to improve things; valuing and respecting others' contribution, you will work together to deliver a better service; you will take pride in always getting things right first time and learn from when things do go wrong; you will enjoy taking personal responsibility to resolve issues and change what you do and how you do it to make a difference.

    You will need to have a solid background in delivering minor civil schemes in the highways sector as well as a good understanding of the nature and requirements of such work. Streetworks Supervisor accreditation is desirable along with either a formal academic qualification in Highways or Civil Engineering, or a good level of previous experience in the sector.

    You will be required to visit sites across the city and potentially beyond the Salford boundary, so a full driving licence is required.

    You will require effective written and oral communication skills and well-developed numeracy skills. Knowledge of highway construction materials and methods of application. Have excellent organisational skills and a good team worker who can motivate and lead by example and be able to communicate effectively with a varied range of customers and colleagues You will require the ability to set and work to prescribed deadlines and targets.
