Full Job Description

Shift Managers are accountable for people, plant, product and process delivery against clearly defined role outputs with a specific responsibility for developing managing and leading a manufacturing team of semi-skilled, advanced skilled, and technically skilled production and engineering team members.

Responsibilities

- Coaching, developing, leading staff and establishing a culture to support all aspects of lean manufacturing teams, utilising established continuous improvement practices

- Adherence to quality and HSE standards

- Delivering plan attainment, OTIF and within budget

- Planning and prioritising work, ensuring maximum use of resources

- Ensuring smooth running and efficiency of machinery

- Leading and delivering continuous improvement projects and improvements to increase efficiency

Leadership

- Leading by example, coaching team members to deliver the planned schedule. Appraisal of your team, identifying, evaluating and developing initiatives to ensure skill and competency levels are developed and maintained.

- Responsible for recruitment, development and training of Technical Operators and operators.

- Managing compliance to Company policies and procedures by managing absence, and, when required, following disciplinary and grievance in accordance with the policies.

Results Focus

- Ensure production and conformance to plan targets are met.

- Plan and implement weekly labour plan, making necessary adjustments on a daily basis.

- Plan and manage overtime requirements.

- Control levels and accuracy of waste and waste recording. Identification of opportunities and leading on projects to reduce and eliminate waste.

- Responsible for and delivering improvement in overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and potential efficiency.

Continuous Improvement

- Champion CI agenda and activities with Team to identify and deliver improvement opportunities continuously identifying ways to reduce costs, improve standards to increase efficiencies in all areas, using appropriate CI methodology and adopting a 'fix forever' mentality.

Communication & influencing skills

- Ensure effective communication between operations team within and across the shifts, management team and positively influence & inspire others to attain higher standards.

- Work closely and develop relationships with other support teams (e.g., Hygiene, Quality, Supply Chain, Health & Safety, HR).

Customer Focus

- Ensure your team understand and demonstrate the importance of high levels of customer service (both internal and external) and identify ways to improve customer satisfaction.

Improving Standards

- Continuously identify ways to reduce costs and improve standards and efficiency in all areas. Drive standards by effective adoption and implementation of established continuous improvement practices.

- Ensure Quality Management Systems and procedures are followed in all areas of responsibility (operators, production and equipment).

- Achieve hygiene audit requirements, plan and manage weekly cleaning schedules.

- Always demonstrate an 'audit ready' production environment.

Problem Solving

- Responsible for identifying and resolving problems in all areas of their remit (operators, production & equipment).

- Manage detail, establish root cause and demonstrate effective problem solving and analytical capability.

Health & Safety

- Own the safety culture to deliver the safety measures and standards required, following Company and statutory regulations.

- Undertake Crisis Incident Management, Accident and Near Miss investigations.

Decision-making

- Exercising professional judgement in relation to repair of equipment, whilst maintaining duty of care responsibilities, ensuring quality, quantity and promotion of a safe working environment.

- Authority to suspend production at any time in the event of any of the above conditions being compromised and understanding the overall impact of these decisions from a safety, quality and financial perspective.

- Ability to deal with disciplinary issues in accordance with Company policy and procedures.

- Recruitment of Technical Operators and operators.

Demonstrable knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma or similar continuous improvement methodologies (Essential)

- University or similar qualification (Desirable)

- Fundamentals: Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) (including energy), standards

- Cross functional understanding & impact Quality Management Systems; Product Quality Evaluation (PQE), Process Control Documentation, Complaint Investigation

- Technical Training for Line Managers (includes Food Safety Act) - Hygiene Schedules, Clean As You Go (CAYG), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), Audit, Personal Hygiene

- Food Safety Level 3

- Full understanding of all relevant Key Performance Indicators

- Financial understanding - Finance for non-financial managers - covering factory finances (Total Prime Cost (TPC)/Overhead (OH)/key business drivers)

- Production planning & logistics

- Plant Familiarisation (e.g. Machine Overview)

- Application of the lean toolkit (5S, Single Minute Exchange of Dye (SMED), OEE, waste elimination, Work In Progress (WIP) reduction)
