Since April 2023, The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic hospital has an Enhanced Recovery (EH) programme in place for all arthroplasty patients this is now standard practice in many hospitals for a range of surgical procedures. This is service is led by 2 orthopaedic consultants Nial Graham and Geraint Thomas and Enhanced Recovery Lead Rebecca Warren.

Enhanced recovery is an evidence-based approach that helps people to recover more quickly after having surgery. It aims to ensure that patients are as healthy as possible prior to treatment, receive the best possible care during their operation and receive the best possible care while recovering. Enhanced recovery programmes aim to get patients back to full health as quickly as possible. Research has shown that the earlier a person gets out of bed and starts walking, eating, and drinking after an operation, the shorter their recovery time will be.

The post holder will be an expert clinical practitioner responsible for providing advanced clinical skills and knowledge for orthopaedic patients, ensuring their effective management and treatment.

The purpose of the role is to improve the patient journey/patient experience from preadmission through to follow up after discharge ensuring seamless care.

The Clinical responsibilities have been divided into the following areas, The successful candidates will be part of a larger arthroplasty practitioner team and there will be an element of cross cover with this team to enable a 365-day service

The post holder is required to work as part of a specialty multi-disciplinary clinical team to provide the highest standard of care for the relevant patient group. Delivery of care is patient focused with an emphasis on meeting individual patient's needs during the preoperative, perioperative, postoperative and follow-up phases of care.

The key characteristics of the role are in line with the HCPC currently relevant.

Take responsibility for case management and coordination of relevant clinics (MDTs, complex case clinics are an example) from a clinical perspective
Act as an advanced surgical practitioner in the relevant specialty
Have an advanced knowledge of the relevant specialty, in order to plan and provide care and treatment.
Provide health education and counselling pathways relevant to the patient group
Continuously improve patient care through audit, research and development of patient information - this will include the submission of timely audits to show compliance with national standards
Provide education to other staff groups caring for the relevant patient group to ensure standards of care are continually met.
