Our client, a division of a global plc, is a leader in the design, engineering and manufacture of specialist access chambers, access covers and other network cable access products for the infrastructure, utility and construction markets. It operates from multiple sites, manufacturing across the UK, Europe and Australia, exporting its products to an expanding worldwide portfolio of customers. As a result of continued growth our client is now seeking to strengthen its new business, specification sales team with the appointment of a Specification Engineer. The Specification Engineer will promote our client's full range of products by way of specification within asset owners and consultant engineering firms, prospecting for business opportunities across our client's target markets in rail, highways, infrastructure, water, utilities, telecoms, general construction and MOD.

The Role:

  • Reporting to a Business Development Manager, the successful candidate will be based from home and be responsible for promoting the full range of our client's access chamber, access covers and network cable access products, by way of specification, within asset owners and consultant engineering firms
  • Prospecting for business opportunities across the companies target market sectors
  • Specifying products at infrastructure design stage.
  • Identifying and prospecting major projects prior to design
  • Engaging with asset owners and designers to 'solution sell' the access chamber and network access product range
  • Collaborating with designers and contractors to produce a project specific solution that improves our client's commercial offering whilst solving asset owner/designer/contractor installation issues
  • Developing market knowledge, project culture and designer preferences and using this knowledge to innovate and enhance our client's competitiveness
  • Provision of regular updates to Senior Management on all activities
  • Liaising with the Technical, Production and Commercial departments
  • Working with the Marketing department to ensure appropriate sales and marketing materials are readily available
  • Supporting sector managers, as required

The Ideal Candidate:

You will have a proven track record of dealing with asset owners, infrastructure and network designers and main contractor engineers within the rail, highways, infrastructure, water, utilities, telecoms, general construction and MOD; and will possess the following skills and competencies:

  • Previous Construction Specification Sales/Specification Engineering experience ideally with knowledge of underground network access, access chambers, access covers or similar products.
  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent in Civil/Structural Engineering
  • Advanced analytical, problem solving and decision making abilities
  • Highly organised and motivated and a strong team player
  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Persuasiveness, customer focus, drive and flexibility
  • A good working relationship cross functionally is essential.
  • A positive and outgoing attitude is critical to this role and this person must be able to liaise closely with all members of the internal business development team as well as customers and stakeholders in order to ensure a cohesive and positive working relationship throughout the business.
  • Will possess a network of contacts within the infrastructure and network design sector including highways, MOD and civil engineering main contractors.
  • This must include experience of specifications, building relationships with consulting engineers and main/tier one contractors including CPD presentations, technical discussions about the installation of products and the quotation, bid and tender process.
  • Ability to see projects through from enquiry to quotation to order, maintaining contact and confidently handling objections at every stage.
  • Detail oriented and familiar with CRM systems.
  • Computer literate including Excel, PowerPoint and CRM systems.
  • Articulate, with good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience / knowledge of one or more of the following sectors: rail, MOD, highways and civil engineering/construction industry
  • Familiar with construction site visits to undertake inspections, with strict adherence to health and safety requirements.
