Shop Sales Assistant Vacancy


If you are an energetic, self-starting individual who cares about the customer experience and would welcome this job-share opportunity to work in a friendly, community owned and award winning village shop, then this is for you. You will also be required to learn how to operate the sub-Post Office.

What will you do?

  • Support the Shop Manager in all aspects of our shops day-to-day operations
  • Working in the sub Post Office when the Postmistress is absent.
  • Champion our local produce principles
  • Ensure wherever possible that our customers always get what they are looking for
  • Be responsible for managing cash and other daily administrative tasks
  • Overseeing the receipt of deliveries and updating online stock records
  • Accounting for stock levels, waste stock and returns
  • Managing health and safety procedures and emergency systems within the shop
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, particularly with regard to food hygiene, alcohol and tobacco sales
  • Helping to solve problems that affect the shops service and efficiency
  • Ensure the store is clean, both on the shop floor and behind the scenes
  • Keep the store clear and ensure any potential hazards are dealt with quickly and efficiently
  • Supervise the duty volunteers

What will you need?

  • A practical, hands-on approach
  • The ability to multi-task as part of a close, friendly, customer-driven management team
  • The willingness to go the extra mile for our customers
  • Excellent people skills
  • A high degree of professionalism, especially when handling difficult situations
  • A proactive approach to solving problems, and the ability to deal with any issue in a tactful and constructive manner
  • The flexibility to work as part of a rolling roster and when required cover colleagues holiday and sickness absences
  • A passion for working in a fast-paced, varied environment
  • Previous Post Office and retail management experience is preferred but not essential as training will be given

What do we offer?

  • Your contractual hours of work will average 17 hours per week (2 days). The shop is open from 8am until 5.30pm (closed for lunch between 1pm and 2pm)
  • 4 weeks of 17 hours holiday per annum plus statutory Bank Holidays
