Microscopist

Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB) is looking to recruit an experienced, part time Microscopist to join our Analytical Sciences Unit.

Background: This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual with a background in science and microscopy to become involved with a broad range of research projects at QIB, working closely with researchers to provide high quality imaging expertise to enable them to achieve their research objectives. The Quadram Institute is a new interdisciplinary research institute at the forefront of a new era in food and health research. It brings together clinical and non-clinical scientists in a new state-of-the-art building due for completion later in 2018. It is based on the Norwich Research Park, one of the largest centres of life sciences in Europe, and home of the John Innes Centre, The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, The Earlham Institute and the University of East Anglia.

The role: The post-holder will work with the existing Microscopist and researchers across QIB to provide expertise in sample preparation and imaging methodologies. They will interact closely with researchers working on a wide range of projects in the areas of food science, microbiology and gut health to develop sample preparation and imaging solutions to enable them to achieve their research objectives.

The main purpose of the role will be to develop and implement methodologies to prepare and image samples to produce high quality images and also to provide expertise in image interpretation where appropriate. The role will also involve general laboratory work, image database management and management of project budgets and allocation and scheduling of work. The post-holder will also provide training in optical, and possibly confocal, microscopy to staff and students.

The ideal candidate: The successful candidate should possess a degree, or equivalent, in biological sciences, a PhD is desirable but not essential. Candidates should possess post graduate research experience involving optical and or electron microscopy. They should have a broad knowledge of biological systems relevant to QIB research in order to discuss scientific and technical issues with research scientists, together with excellent organisational and project management skills. Full training will be given in areas where the post-holder is less experienced.

Additional information: This is a part-time position (18.5 hours per week) for a period of 2 years. Salary on appointment will be within the range £15,625 to £19,050 per annum depending on qualifications and experience (based on a fulltime equivalent salary of £31,250 - £38,100).
