    Job Duties

    The successful candidate will contribute to the ongoing development of our medical modelling capability, focusing particularly on evidence gathering and applying the model to set mortality or morbidity assumptions commercially.

    The successful candidate will also support the acquisition of evidence and model development to improve forecasting and underwriting capability.

    Principal Accountabilities

    Support the investigation and evaluation of external mortality/longevity data sources, and help report on these analyses for use in longevity risk assessment.

    Ensure the evidence for medical modelling is appropriately documented, with limitations noted. Examples of evidence may include statistics, analyses of raw data, scientific literature, etc.

    Specify data requirements from various sources including customers data for analyses.

    Explore and develop market-leading techniques, including machine learning capability to analyse data.

    Assist with the specification of the data inputs for the medical modelling framework, making use of mortality data and modelling knowledge. This will include specification around the modelling framework for disease specific mortality co-morbidity and risk factors and their interactions.

    This will include acquisition, analysis, validation and documentation of evidence and embedding of knowledge within the team.

    Contribute to the parameterisation of medical modelling for each key disease group. Support the process of mapping the sources of evidence to the model inputs and risk selection process as defined by LGRR medical underwriting team.

    This will include liaising with other business areas, including the Pricing and underwriting teams to agree the parameterisation approach for risk selection by severity.

    Where relevant, ensure the outputs by third party suppliers are appropriate. Examples may include assessment of choice of sources of evidence, dataset, data modification, modelling methods and application of expert judgment and level of parameters proposed.

    Contribute to report writing and communication relating to medical modelling.

    Contribute to data management, mortality analyses and programming.

    Support the development of the technical library for medical modelling.

    When required, support the team in the delivery of regular mortality analysis to assist with the delivery of LGRR strategic objectives, particularly in the development of trend and economic capital longevity and demographic assumptions for both the UK and international business.

    Treat customers fairly as required by company's policy.

    Skills Required

    Qualifications and Knowledge

    This role would be suitable for someone with appropriate experience and expertise in machine learning, epidemiology, statistics, or other relevant medical mortality modelling. The role requires an understanding of, and the ability to develop independently, disease based statistical models including experience with multi-state modelling.

    Graduates in relevant fields and Post-graduate qualification will be advantageous.

    Professional qualifications will be considered.

    Advanced statistical knowledge or machine learning is required.

    Experience in understanding the applicability and relevance of medical mortality data and research to modelling mortality by disease, including severity and co-morbidity will be preferred.

    Knowledge of relevant health and mortality databases would be preferred.

    Analysis and reporting of internal and external mortality data sets and understanding impact on mortality and mortality measures (life expectancy, annuity values, survival analyses, capital and reserving impact).

    Experience in a health analytics environment would be favourable. Practical experience in data acquisition for model development is required.

    Longevity experience is preferred with specific knowledge of base and trend mortality and common practices. Knowledge of statistical methodologies to longevity modelling or in a health analytics environment would be favourable. Practical experience in evidence acquisition for model development is required.


    Communication - competent written, oral and presentation skills to liaise with Stakeholders.

    Team work - Ability to understand the tasks required. Work effectively with team members, external suppliers and other key stakeholders.

    Documentation - Ability and drive to maintain excellent documentation and audit trails.

    Medical evidencing - Ability to analyse scientific literature, statistics and other evidence, leading to understandable conclusions.

    Problem Solving - Ability to identify problems and suggest pragmatic solutions.

    Planning - Ability to plan and organise own tasks setting out purpose, objectives, milestones, deliverable dates etc..
