Location: Harpenden, Herts
A Head Gardener is required to manage a team of four gardeners and
contractors, responsible for ten acres of gardens, woodland and borders
associated with the estate at Rothamsted Research which also includes a
16th Century Manor House and associated on site and peripheral tenanted
Main duties will include managing and organising the gardening team on
grounds and lawns maintenance; tree, shrub, hedge and herbaceous borders
plantings and maintenance as well as assisting research in the plant growth
The post holder will be expected to have extensive knowledge of garden
machinery with a good horticultural background. Tree assessment skills are
required and the ability to supervise arboriculture work when required.
An ability to manage contractors, negotiate with tenants, develop new
planting schemes, encourage volunteer staff, produce and maintain
wonderful gardens whilst retaining a sense of humour is a must! This is a
very hands-on gardening job.
Applicants must be physically fit and possess extensive horticultural and
supervisory experience, although further training will be given where
required. A full driving licence is essential.
An initial three year contract with a possibility to renew is offered with a
starting salary of up to £26,573 per annum.
