Apprentice Pig Stockperson (ref 117)
Working on a 450 sow outdoor pig breeding unit, farrowing every 3 weeks producing 500 plus weaners. The piglets remain on their mothers for approximately 4 weeks before being weaned and are then moved to nursery/fattening units. The job includes feeding sows, strawing up huts, moving sows, weaning piglets, dealing with fallen stock, artificial insemination, identifying illness and administering vaccinations/medicine. Will be expected to practice good bio-security and accurate record keeping.
Hours of work - 30-40 hours per week, Monday Friday with some weekend work
Qualifications & Skills required - Minimum of 3x GCSEs at Grade E or above, including Maths and English (or equivalent). must have a keen interest in working with livestock and their welfare. Need to enjoy being outside and experience with driving a tractor is desirable but not essential as full training will be given.
