An opportunity exists for a Laboratory Analyst in the Chemistry work area of the Radiological and Chemical Sciences (RACS) Group at Cefas. The work area comprises a diverse group of scientists who provide high quality analytical support, data interpretation and scientific advice to a comprehensive portfolio of internal and external contracts for UK and international customers.  The purpose of the role is to provide analytical and technical support for monitoring and research activities related to measurements of contaminants in the marine environment, as part of the vision for clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse seas and oceans. 

 

The successful candidate will:

  • Prepare and analyse samples for organic contaminants in the marine environment

  • Calibrate instruments and maintain records

  • Prepare reagents

  • Deliver of quality assured data

  • Work in accordance with formal quality systems (ISO/IEC17025)

  • Update databases

     

    There will also be opportunities to gain experience in other areas of marine science such as nutrient chemistry and sedimentology.

     

    There may be an opportunity for sea-going or fieldwork duties

     

    Academic qualifications required for direct entry into this PB3 post are 2 A levels or an equivalent qualification. In addition the following skills are essential:

     

  • Practical experience of working in an analytical laboratory, instrument maintenance (GC and/or LC), experience in quality control and associated documentation.

  • You must be customer focussed and highly self-motivated.

  • You must have sound problem-solving skills and will be methodical, organised and have an excellent attention to detail.

  • You must have good communication skills, both verbally and in writing, be flexible and possess the ability to organise your own workload to meet deadlines.

  • Experience of working in a team and the ability to work both independently using your own initiative and to follow Standard Operating Procedures.

  • You must be able to work under pressure to tight deadlines.

  • Good IT skills are essential including experience with standard Microsoft applications such as Excel and Word.

  • Experience in quality control systems is essential
