Full Job Description

Kew House School is seeking an enthusiastic Biology Teacher (maternity cover) to join our friendly and successful department. We invite applications from those wishing to inspire pupils to achieve their full potential in biology, and welcome applications from both ECTs and experienced teachers. Kew House School was established in the conviction that there exists an opportunity for a different kind of independent secondary school in London - academically demanding but with a forward-thinking approach to selection criteria, the flexibility of the curriculum, the shape of the school day, and recognition of creativity and talent. A character-selective school, we pride ourselves on the support and care we extend to our 600 pupils whilst striving to add value to their success in all fields of academia, sport, and creativity. Kew House has successfully grown over ten years since its foundation and was recently awarded the ISI "Excellent" grading. The successful candidate will:

  • Have a good degree in an appropriate subject and a recognised teaching qualification
  • Promote a love of biology for every pupil by delivering engaging and stimulating lessons which set appropriate learning expectations and targets for improvement
  • Have the capacity to raise attainment through motivating, challenging, and inspiring our pupils
  • Have experience of, or the ability to, teach Biology at A-Level and GCSE; the ability to offer another science at GCSE is advantageous but not essential
  • It would be advantageous for candidates to be able to prepare students for the Biology Olympiad, support Oxford and Cambridge applications in Biology, support medical applications, and related subjects
  • Have the ability to offer all science disciplines at KS3
  • Be able to develop suitable curriculum materials to support students' learning at A Level
  • Have experience in the development of outstanding resources, lesson sequences and schemes of work for new courses as the Science curriculum continues to evolve
  • Have a commitment to, and experience of, using a range of teaching styles and methods, including ICT (classrooms are equipped with IWB / digital projectors)
  • Help foster a culture of high expectations of practical experiments and delivery of challenging content within the department
  • Have drive, enthusiasm, warmth, and humour
  • Have a willingness to work as a team and to collaborate with colleagues
  • Have the willingness to offer extra support through additional revision sessions and subject clinics throughout the year, when necessary, to guarantee the progress of pupils
  • Have a willingness to participate in the wider co-curricular life of the school by engaging in clubs and societies, showing commitment to the ethos of the school and flexibility in achieving its aims
  • All staff are expected to have a clear understanding of the aims, objectives, and ethos of the school, and an awareness of its role in the community. The academic and pastoral frameworks in the school must be seen as interrelated. Curriculum Science has a role of great importance within the curriculum. The faculty is exceptionally well equipped with seven dedicated laboratories and a prep room. All labs are well provided with resources to ensure the delivery of a dynamic and exhilarating curriculum for our students, where practical investigation is placed at the heart of teaching and learning in order to engage and inspire our students as young scientists. We teach general science to year 7, then separate physics, chemistry, and biology from year 8 onwards. The KHS Biology Department is thriving. Results are excellent, and both Medicine and Natural Sciences are popular university choices at KHS. We prepare a number of students to sit the UCAT and ESAT each year, and the ability to support this is advantageous for candidates. Many of our Year 12 and 13 students sit the Biology Olympiad, which we help prepare them for. Facilities The main building is equipped with seven laboratories, all furnished with interactive smartboards. Kew House delivers a highly practical science curriculum, with two dedicated Science Technicians supporting the department. How to Apply Kew House School will only consider applications from candidates who complete the official school application and equal opportunities forms. These are available in the supporting documents or on our website via the 'Apply' button. CVs cannot be accepted as a substitute for the application forms, but may be submitted in addition to them. Application deadline: Friday, 5 June 2026. Interviews: TBC. Early applications are strongly encouraged. Kew House School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
