Full Job Description

As a Senior Planning Officer, you'll play a key role in evaluating and determining a wide range of planning applications, from minor applications to less complex major developments. You'll provide pre-application advice, negotiate with applicants and planning agents, prepare reports for Planning Committee, and represent the Council at appeals. You'll also contribute to safeguarding our built and natural environment, including Listed Buildings, Conservation Areas, and protected trees, and work closely with colleagues across the Council, elected members, and the public. What we're looking for? North East Derbyshire District Council is a dynamic and ambitious organisation that takes pride in delivering excellent services to our community whilst driving economic growth and environmental sustainability for the district. The Planning Service is integral to the delivery of the Council's growth agenda. The successful candidate will be an essential part of the Development Management team and will be expected to deliver timely decisions on planning applications leading to sustainable development.

  • A recognised professional planning qualification and eligibility for RTPI membership.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Town and Country Planning system and the National Planning Policy Framework.
  • Experience in Development Management, including assessing and determining planning applications and representing the Council at appeal.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to prepare clear, robust reports and collaborate effectively with stakeholders.
  • Confidence in interpreting architectural drawings and working both independently and as part of a team.
  • A full driving licence and the ability to travel across the district.

The District of North East Derbyshire faces some unique challenges in balancing its desire for growth whilst protecting the assets that make the District a desirable place to live and work. Due to its attractive countryside, proximity to the Peak District National Park and its location within the Sheffield City region the District is subject to significant pressure for development, whilst a significant portion of the District is designated as Green Belt.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a supportive and forward-thinking planning team, where your expertise will help deliver high-quality development and protect the character of our communities.
  • North East Derbyshire District Council is a great place to work and if you join our team, you will become part of a talented and dedicated workforce. If you are keen to make a difference to people's lives and develop your skills and experience, we would like to hear from you. In return the Council offers:
  • A supportive and collaborative working environment.
  • Opportunities for professional development and career progression.
  • Flexible working arrangements, up to 35 days annual leave and a strong focus on work-life balance.
  • Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme and other employee benefits.
