Full Job Description

Under the guidance of a midwifery mentor preceptor, lead, plan and implement high quality safe midwifery care to women and their families. Here at Torbay Hospital Maternity Unit we are proud of the preceptorship programme we offer to new midwives. You will be allocated a PMA, an education training facilitator and a preceptor. Training is offered and structured into your rota, including Trustwide preceptorship days, PMA sessions, clinical induction days and medicines management. We are able to offer a preceptorship at minimum hours of 30 p/w up to full time,

  • To assess the full range of care needs and develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period for women and their babies
  • To work autonomously within guidelines and sphere of professional practice
  • To act as a mentor or practice supervisor for less experienced midwives, students and other members of the multi-professional team
  • Work within NMC codes of practice and professional guidelines.
  • Lead Professional for low-risk women
  • Provide antenatal, intrapartum and post-natal care
  • Work collaboratively with professional colleagues to provide midwifery care to with women with complex needs
  • Contribute with feedback, to ensure the health and social care setting is responsive to the individual needs of women, particularly those who are disadvantaged, and where appropriate, advocate for these women
  • Advocate and support the rights of individual women to make informed choices about their care
  • Promote equality, diversity and rights
  • Participate in and undertake annual appraisal, identifying specific training requirements as part of service planning and continuous personal development

    Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is proud to provide an integrated model of midwifery providing continuity of care. There are 6 community midwifery teams providing care to the region of South Devon. Together with this we have a hospital based midwifery team (Meridian Team) which provides care to all women during their antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal stay in hospital. There is also a Maternity Assessment Unit and Antenatal clinical situated within the Maternity Unit and a stand alone 2 bedded Midwifery Led Unit.
