Job Category: Teaching and ResearchJob Description:Are you a computational modelling expert with a passion for applied research and real-world impact? Do you want to bridge academia and industry while developing cutting-edge tools for rail infrastructure monitoring?We are seeking a talented and motivated Numerical Modelling Specialist to join a high-impact KTP collaboration between Northumbria University and Zetica Ltd - a market leader in geophysical surveying. This unique role offers the opportunity to enhance and extend an existing simulation platform for railway track bed modelling using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology.As a KTP Associate, you will lead the development of a next-generation 3D simulation solution that accurately replicates the electromagnetic behaviour of GPR systems in complex rail environments. This will include realistic modelling of track bed materials, 3D antenna design, and validation against real-world data. You'll be based at Zetica, working closely with both academic and industrial teams to turn research into impactful commercial innovation.What You'll Do
- Lead a collaborative R&D project applying advanced numerical modelling to real-world rail challenges.
- Develop and implement 3D simulation tools using Python to model GPR responses in rail track bed environments.
- Integrate realistic subsurface materials and antenna models into the simulation platform.
- Validate simulation outputs against field data and feed into product development.
- Translate academic expertise into practical tools for Zetica Ltd's operations.
- Report progress and present findings to stakeholders across academia and industry.
A 1st or 2:1 Master's degree in a relevant STEM discipline (e.g. Physics, Engineering, Geophysics); a PhD is desirable - Applicants must have completed their degree; PhD candidates must have submitted their thesis prior to starting. Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong background in numerical modelling, electromagnetics, and wave propagation.
- Advanced proficiency in Python programming.
- Experience in scientific research or applied development projects. Desirable
- Experience with software development tools and workflows.
