Full Job Description

Our growing Infrastructure, Projects and Energy (IPE) team is looking for an experienced Lawyer (4+PQE) to join our team in Manchester to advise public and private sector clients on a variety of energy and utilities, social infrastructure and transport projects. In this role, you will work on commercial contracts relating to infrastructure and public services and advise on the full spectrum of issues relating to energy and utilities, social infrastructure and transport sector mandates, acting for a broad range of public sector bodies, utilities, companies, developers and financial institutions. THE TEAM: Renowned IPE practice with top-tier rankings, offering multi-disciplinary expertise globally across diverse markets, including water, energy, transport, healthcare, and infrastructure. The team advises developers, sponsors, funders, and public/private sector clients on complex and high-profile projects, including novel and "first in class" schemes. Notable Projects:

  • Social infrastructure: Turks and Caicos Hospital PPP, new hospital in Indonesia, Salford City Council's £80m housing regeneration, NHS Trust IP commercialisation, and private hospital NHS service procurement.
  • Energy and utilities: United Utilities' Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme, Sizewell C nuclear power station, SGN's Gas to the West pipeline, and Southern Water's Havant Thicket project.
  • Transport: Rail, urban transit, ports, freight, and logistics projects for the Department for Transport, Network Rail, Transport for London, and Transport for Greater Manchester.
  • Recent and Current Work:
  • National Grid: Outsourcing FM and land management services.
  • Shell: Gas tolling agreement for Seabank power station.
  • Transport authorities: Bus reform for West Midlands Combined Authority, Merseytravel, and South Yorkshire Combined Authority.
  • Department for Transport: Renationalisation of the English rail network.
  • Scotrail: Rolling stock matters.
  • West Midlands Combined Authority: Rail stations programme.
  • Nuclear Decommissioning Authority: Procurement of commercial contracts and MOUs.
  • NHS Trusts, local authorities, and sponsors: Advice on distressed and expiring PFI projects.
  • With support from the team, you will have responsibility for drafting and negotiating commercial documents, managing transaction processes, and supervising the contribution of less experienced colleagues. Strongly encouraged to take responsibility for business development both by engaging directly with client contacts at networking events and by providing training. Taking an active role in leading and developing junior talent within the team.

  • 4+ years PQE with strong experience in Infrastructure, Energy, or Transport sectors (national or international).
  • Open to more experienced candidates with broader commercial contracts expertise.
  • Ability to support complex transactions and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong drafting skills, including free drafting of complex concepts.
  • Proactive in contributing to group training, precedents, and know-how.
  • Client-facing, with enthusiasm for challenging work and delivering high standards.
  • Interested in business development and mentoring junior team members.
  • Ability to manage and develop junior colleagues' technical and soft skills.
  • Commercial awareness to understand and advise on client and counterpart drivers.
  • Passionate about infrastructure sectors and resilient under tight deadlines.
