Full Job Description

We are recruiting a Locum Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics with a specialist interest in lower limb arthroplasty, including complex primary and revision surgery, for a 12 month fixed term period based at Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen. This is an exciting opportunity to join a progressive, supportive and forward thinking Trauma & Orthopaedic team delivering both elective and emergency care within the Health Board. The post offers the chance to contribute to a developing and ambitious arthroplasty service, with a focus on high-quality outcomes, patient safety and service innovation. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping and delivering complex lower limb arthroplasty pathways in line with Health Board and regional priorities.,

  • Providing expert clinical care in Trauma & Orthopaedics, including the assessment, diagnosis, and surgical management of patients requiring complex primary and revision lower limb arthroplasty procedures.
  • Contributing to the delivery and ongoing development of a high-quality, sustainable arthroplasty service aligned to Health Board objectives and regional orthopaedic transformation programmes.
  • Sharing responsibility for the acute management of trauma patients, including participation in a 1 in 12 on-call rota, ensuring safe, timely and consultant-led decision making for emergency admissions.
  • Leading and supporting multidisciplinary working across orthopaedics, including close collaboration with specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and orthogeriatric teams to optimise patient outcomes, particularly for frail and elderly patients.
  • Supporting the development of integrated care pathways across hospital and community settings, ensuring continuity of care and improved patient experience.
  • Contributing to clinical governance, quality improvement and audit activities, ensuring practice meets the highest standards of safety, effectiveness and patient-centred care.
  • Demonstrating leadership in service development, including identifying opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and improved clinical outcomes within arthroplasty and trauma services.

    We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and skilled clinician with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care. The role requires advanced surgical capability in lower limb arthroplasty, alongside the ability to manage complex and high-risk cases, including revision surgery. The ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, contribute to service development, and support training and governance activities is essential.
