Full Job Description

The Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer Clinical Nurse team has an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 CNS to join a dynamic and welcoming group of 16 staff. You will deliver high-quality, holistic care to patients and their families across the GI cancer pathway, using expert clinical knowledge to provide specialist advice, emotional support and care coordination. This cross-site role encompasses the full scope of specialist CNS practice and requires the post holder to work across both Scarborough and York, with dedicated responsibilities at each site during the week. Working closely with the wider multidisciplinary team, you will build strong relationships with surgical, oncology, pathology and radiology consultants, while being supported to develop your skills and knowledge in GI cancers. The role also includes - Contributing to service improvement Supporting team learning and development Building professional networks Promoting the GI service through education and cancer awareness events.Main duties of the job Manage a large GI cancer cohort, including around 600 active patients requiring CNS intervention and holistic support, and more than 1,000 patients on a remote surveillance programme. Act as a consistent point of contact across the cancer pathway, developing therapeutic relationships to ensure patients and families feel informed, supported, and involved in decisions. Advocate for patient preferences to maintain personalised, responsive care. Deliver independent nurse-led clinics, providing cancer diagnoses, follow-up information, and support through complex and emotive discussions. Complete comprehensive assessments across treatment, follow-up, survivorship, and supportive care, identifying priorities and delivering specialist advice aligned with individual goals. Use expert clinical judgement to triage needs, initiate timely interventions, and escalate to the MDT when required. Request and interpret investigations, making autonomous decisions regarding follow-up or referral. Use digital systems for real-time management and oversee the GI surveillance platform, reviewing results, identifying patients needing escalation, and ensuring continuity and safety. Maintain high-quality, evidence-based care and contribute to audit, service improvement, education, and mentorship to support consistent, high-standard practice.
