Full Job Description

We have a role for an Electoral Officer to join us in Cornwall Council! This role sites within the Finance and Assurance Directorate within Governance, Elections and Democratic Services, supporting the democratic process across Cornwall. The team is responsible for maintaining the electoral register and delivering elections, referenda and polls in line with statutory requirements and Electoral Commission guidance. As an Electoral Officer, you will play a key role in ensuring that elections are delivered lawfully, transparently and efficiently, while maintaining an accurate and up-to-date electoral register. This is a fast-paced and rewarding role, particularly during election periods, where you will work collaboratively with colleagues, temporary staff, elected members and the public., This is a public/customer-facing role, where the statutory English language requirement for public sector workers applies. In this role, you will support all aspects of electoral registration and election delivery. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing electoral data, systems and records to ensure accuracy and security
  • Coordinating polling stations, materials and election logistics
  • Supporting the recruitment, training and supervision of temporary election staff
  • Administering postal vote processes and undertaking quality assurance checks
  • Providing advice and guidance to candidates, stakeholders and the public
  • Monitoring deadlines and escalating risks to ensure compliance
  • Supporting public engagement activities and electoral reviews
  • Identifying opportunities to improve processes and service delivery
  • You will contribute to ensuring elections are delivered in line with legal requirements and that the integrity of the voting process is upheld at all times. The role is a full time, permanent role working 37 hours per week. We can offer flexible options such as hybrid working (from home or our offices in Truro) or compressed hours. You will be required to work flexibly, including evenings, weekends and unsociable hours during election periods, to meet service requirements., Existing employees must apply using their Cornwall Council email address through the Opportunity Marketplace on Oracle.

  • A minimum of four GCSEs
  • Electoral Administration qualification or willingness to achieve
  • Experience using IT systems
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines under pressure
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
