Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as part of the Hospital out of Hours team under the guidance and support of the Critical Care Outreach Team. The Band 3 Clinical Support Worker will work across all clinical areas, supporting the out-of-hours teams to deliver timely and patient centred care. Key roles and responsibilities will include cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs, catheterisation; working independently without direct supervision and seeking guidance/support from CCOT as necessary. We are looking for motivated, enthusiastic individuals that feel capable of prioritising their own workload, maintaining high standards of care whilst working collaboratively to improve the care for our patients. The majority of shifts for this role will be twilight, nights and weekend work. The successful candidate will be expected:

  • To provide 'clinical support' duties in all designated clinical areas within the hospital environment
  • To be part of the Hospital at Night team
  • To train to undertake agreed tasks, when requested to do so by a registered healthcare professional under the instruction of a doctor or registered nurse, in order to reduce the Junior Doctors' workload and support patient care
  • To provide 'healthcare support worker' support to ward areas if required., Work as part of the Hospital at Night accepting any duties as delegated by the Operational Practitioner/Clinical Co-ordinator.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • To undertake training and be assessed as competent in the following procedures: acute phlebotomy, including group and save and cross matching, blood cultures and venous blood gases insertion of peripheral intravenous cannula recording and obtaining of 12 lead ECG readings catheterisation of male and female patients.
  • Undertake any other tasks as deemed applicable at NVQ Level 3, taking into account acute hospital workload at the time, e.g. collecting medical notes, transferring urgent referral cards to the appropriate departments and escorting patients.
  • Work within a day/night rotation.
  • Be aware of and manage exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances.
  • Be aware of and manage exposure to verbal/physical aggression

    Good written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with patients and staff of all disciplines, in both written and verbal forms.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the needs of the patient.
  • Work as part of the multi-disciplinary team, supporting Junior Doctors, wards and departments within a defined range of clinical tasks.
