Full Job Description
The role: The Artist in Residence is a teacher, workshop leader and mentor for boys of all abilities at Harrow. You will teach a reduced timetable of around 8 periods per week, as well as leading specialist workshops, contributing to arts clubs and providing one-to-one support for pupils needing specialist guidance. It is a varied role that enthuses pupils to develop their skills and a passion for art, supervises exhibitions, and supports the School's charitable outreach. The skills: This role will suit a committed practising artist, ideally educated to degree level and actively exhibiting work nationally/internationally. You will be confident in your critical and contextual understanding and be willing to explore new media making full use of the department's resources. Your approachable, friendly and encouraging persona will be of benefit as you share your expertise and collaborate with the perspectives of others. Experience of working with and motivating young people to explore their artistic potential is desirable.
The environment: Harrow School is situated in Harrow on the Hill, northwest London, and is one of the best-known schools in the world. Around 835 boys study at Harrow and live in the School's 12 boarding houses. The Art department is a centre of excellence at Harrow. All boys study the subject in their first year and some 50-60 boys typically continue to GCSE. Around 30 boys normally take the A level Fine art course and around 20 opt for the Edexcel A level Photography course. We also offer the A-level qualification in History of Art. The department has an exemplary track record of results in these public examinations. There are currently three full-time teachers, two part-time teachers and four full-time art technicians in the Art department.
